Two teenage illegal miners killed in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the death of two teenagers suspected to be illegal miners in the Tunga area of Minna, the state capital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said the victims were killed by gunmen.

It was learnt that the incident occurred around 4am on Sunday when the miners numbering about 50 embarked on an illegal mining activity.

Our correspondent gathered that the teenagers, whose names could not be ascertained, were known to be notorious illegal miners in the area.

Some villagers explained that the miners had been warned against carrying out their illegal activities, which had been affecting farming activities in the area.

It was, however, suggested that the illegal miners could have been ambushed by some aggrieved farmers, whose farms were destroyed by the illegal miners.

The police spokesman, however, said investigation was ongoing to apprehend those involved in the incident.
